Mapleseed ECO Responsibility
Wood finishes are meant to enhance the beauty of wood and protect the piece over the years. Unfortunately though, many commercial wood finishes contain petroleum distillates, solvents or other chemical driers and additives. While some are classified as non-toxic when fully cured, most discharge harmful vapours into the air when being applied, and in some cases they can continue to leach toxic chemicals for years. This isn’t good for the the customer or the craftsman … and so we are trying to do our part to take a more earth friendly approach to wood finishing.
While we have always tried to source responsibly harvested lumber and have used earth friendly products in our workshop, we have now made a more serious commitment to environmental responsibility. Effective January 1, 2011, we will begin to use only earth friendly finishes on all of our wood turned products.
Look for the Mapleseed Eco Leaf logo on or attached to our newer items as your assurance that the piece was finished with environmentally sound natural oils, waxes, solvents and shellacs.

There are many great wood finishes and treatments out there, but to keep your Mapleseed Gallery wooden ware in tip-top condition, we recommend periodic applications of Clapham’s Beeswax Salad Bowl Finish. It’s not just for salad bowls! Made in Canada, from edible food grade mineral oil and beeswax, this food safe, non-toxic finish protects the wood and gives it a soft lustrous shine. It is really easy to use: Just rub it in lightly over the wood, and wipe it off. You can use the surface immediately, or you can wait overnight and buff it lightly for a soft shine.
